2020 Notable Women in Law – Crain's New York Business

Crain’s New York Business has named 100 New Yorkers to the list of 2020 Notable Women in Law, the third year we are honoring dedicated, gifted and determined female lawyers. Our city is full of trailblazing attorneys who are passionate about serving their clients and staying on top of their game. In a world full of injustices, they are fierce in their commitment to public service and pro bono causes. For these women, balance is an essential part of life: juggling distinguished careers, family, and philanthropic activities.
None of this is easy. In November, the American Bar Association and ALM Intelligence released a groundbreaking report that explores why senior women are more likely than men to leave the practice of law. The data show that women in large firms have far less access than men to the building blocks of success. They have fewer business development opportunities, must contend with a pervasive perception that they are less committed to careers, and are significantly more likely to be overlooked for advancement or denied promotions.
Typically, 45% of incoming associate classes at big firms are women. But time takes a toll as these lawyers advance in seniority. In 2018, women accounted for only 20% of equity partners. According to the report, the number of lawyers named as new equity partners fell by nearly 30% in recent years as firms increasingly hire lateral partners, more than 70% of them men.
The report, aptly named “Walking Out the Door,” was based on input from more than 1,200 big-firm lawyers in practice for at least 15 years. (A number of this year’s honorees work at the law firms that funded this research and participated in the survey.) A level playing field for senior lawyers who are women, the report cautions, “is necessary for law firms to succeed in a market that is increasingly demanding not only a professed commitment to diversity and inclusion, but actual proof of success in achieving that objective.” It is a call to action that surely resonates with the 100 powerful women lawyers that make up Crain’s 2020 honorees.
The profiles in this report are drawn from submitted nomination materials as well as from Crain’s New York Business editorial research. No lawyer paid to be featured. The 2020 list of Notable Women in Law celebrates an exceptional pool of talented female attorneys in the New York City metro area. Please join us in congratulating this year’s outstanding class.
