In the movies, hackers have fancy gadgets at big desks, but in real life, one teenager showed that a simple Amazon Fire TV Stick, smartphone, keyboard, and mouse can be enough to leak clips from a secret game. The game in question is the highly awaited Grand Theft Auto VI. The person behind this, Arion Kurtaj, was already in trouble for allegedly hacking other companies like NVIDIA. He’s a member of a hacking group called Lapsus$.

This 18-year-old managed to get into Rockstar Games, the company that makes GTA VI. He even introduced himself as an “attacker” on the company’s Slack channel. And guess where he did all this? In a budget hotel room in the UK, where he was staying because people had put his personal information online and he needed to stay safe.

At the hotel, he didn’t have access to the internet, but he cleverly used an Amazon Fire TV Stick to work around this problem. This device let him get online and carry out his plan.

After a trial that lasted seven weeks, Kurtaj was found guilty of hacking into Rockstar Games, as well as other companies like Revolut and Uber. Another 17-year-old was also found guilty, but unlike Kurtaj, this person is still out on bail. Interestingly, both of these individuals have autism, which meant that they were not considered fit to stand trial by psychiatrists. So, the trial only focused on whether they committed the crimes, not whether they meant to do something wrong.

Lapsus$ is known as a group of “digital bandits” and is thought to be made up mostly of teenagers from the UK and Brazil. Kurtaj and the 17-year-old are two out of seven people from the UK who were arrested. Between 2021 and 2022, Lapsus$ is believed to have hacked into big companies like Samsung, T-Mobile, and Microsoft. They even asked for money to return control back to these companies, but we’re not sure how much money they actually made from these activities.
