Bankrate collected premium data from Quadrant Information Services for insurance companies in Virginia. Because each company has its own rating algorithm, prices vary for the same coverage:

Every city and even every ZIP code has its own unique set of rating factors, like the likelihood of accidents, that affects its premiums.
As is the case in most states, younger drivers tend to pay more for auto insurance in Virginia than older drivers. This is likely due to the inexperience of young drivers. Teen drivers face the most expensive premiums in part due to the number of accidents and traffic-related fatalities for their age range.

This is because, if you have accidents and tickets on your driving record, insurance companies usually view you as more likely to cause an accident in the future. If you have a DUI on your record, you could be facing car insurance premiums that are over twice as high as the state average.

If you finance your vehicle with a lease or loan, you will likely be required to have full coverage car insurance by the dealer or lender. If you do not have a loan and you opt for liability only coverage, you will be responsible for your vehicle’s repairs or replacement out of pocket.
Liability-only coverage covers you for damage that you cause to others, including their injuries and property damage. Full coverage includes comprehensive and collision insurance, which provide coverage for damages to your own vehicle.

To determine minimum coverage limits, Bankrate used minimum coverages that meet each state’s requirements. Our base profile drivers own a 2019 Toyota Camry, commute five days a week and drive 12,000 miles annually.
