Gonzaga announced Friday it will honor Adam Morrison later this month, and his jersey will become the third in program history to hang inside the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The ceremony will take place Feb. 27 prior to the Zags’ home game against San Diego. Morrison’s No. 3 jersey will join John Stockton’s No. 12 and Frank Burgess’ No. 44.
Morrison will be on hand and then take a seat courtside as an analyst on Gonzaga’s radio broadcast.
Gonzaga officials said Morrison’s No. 3 isn’t being retired. Sophomore forward Filip Petrusev wears No. 3 for the second-ranked Bulldogs.
Morrison, one of the most prolific scorers in school history, captured the nation’s attention in 2006. The Mead High product led the country in scoring at 28.1 points per game. He was a consensus All-American and shared two national player of the year awards with Duke’s JJ Redick.
Morrison led the Zags to a 29-4 record and No. 5 ranking in the final AP poll after a heartbreaking loss to UCLA in the Sweet 16. He shot nearly 50% from the field and connected on 42.8% of his 3-pointers.
The 6-foot-8 forward played three seasons for the Zags, ending his career No. 3 on the scoring list (1,867 points). He had five 40-point games.
Morrison entered the draft after his junior season in 2006 and was selected third overall by Charlotte. He was with Charlotte for three years but was forced to sit out the 2008 season with a knee injury. He was traded to Los Angeles and saw limited time on the Lakers’ NBA championship teams in 2009 and 2010.
Morrison was inducted into the West Coast Conference Hall of Honor last March during the WCC Tournament in Las Vegas. He collected two WCC Tournament MVP awards and was the conference player of the year in 2006.
