The Department of Social Development announced that recipients of the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant must reapply for the assistance as it will now be paid out under a new legislative framework
The National State of Disaster, which facilitated the SRD grant, came to an end in April 2022. However, the Department of Social Development has been working on a regulatory framework for the payment of the grant since President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the extension of the grant.
The SASSA R350 grant’s new legislative framework has additional qualifying and assessment criteria, which is why recipients have to reapply if they’ve previously received assistance.
“Fortunately, the entire application system remains a purely digital process, thereby enabling quick access and turnaround times,” said the department.

The department said applicants will be considered for the SASSA R350 grant from the month in which the application is made and it will be validated every month.
“This means that all applications lodged in April will be considered as from April 2022.”

SASSA explained that the last three digits of approved beneficiaries’ identity numbers would be used for payment collection on a specific day of the week.
“This will help minimize the spread of Covid-19 infections and allow for social distancing on pay days.”

President Ramaphosa has recently outlined his ambitions to extend and expand the R350 grant from its current form.
