The Red Oak senior signed her letter of intent on Monday to play for Carl Albert State College in Poteau. It’s been a dream of hers to play at the next level since she was younger.
The Lady Vikings are getting someone who has been a catalyst for much of Red Oak’s success in recent years. She’s been a big bat at the plate, be it in fast-pitch — when she batted .537 with three home runs as a senior, or in slow-pitch, when she batted .672 with 32 home runs and 98 RBIs as a junior.
She’s also a five-time state champion. Her favorite state championship was her sophomore slow-pitch season in 2017, when the Lady Eagles rebounded after a loss in the regional tournament.
“We had to come together more as a team then — just have each other’s back rather than any other time just because we had to come through the losers bracket,” Hunter said.
For Hunter, signing was a feeling of relief, calling it the beginning of the next chapter of her life. She said the recruiting process was stressful at first, but made up her mind quickly. Hunter said she visited and talked to coach David Holt before Thanksgiving break, and made her decision by the holiday break.
Being close to home and fitting in at a smaller school factored in to her decision.
She’ll also be reunited with a former teammate. Darcie McCullar graduated from Red Oak in 2018 and is currently a freshman on the Lady Vikings.
“I’m honestly very, very excited,” Hunter said. “…It’s awesome that I’m going to get to play with her again.”
Hunter’s going to inquire about practicing with the Lady Eagles this summer in an effort to stay in shape before she heads off to Carl Albert as a business administration major.
Before she does that, she wants to go out on top as a winner and a state champion all four years in high school. Hunter and the Lady Eagles were ranked No. 9 in Class A this week by the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association.
She likes their chances, but knows it will be a challenge with Kiowa moving down from Class 2A, and also having to compete with Varnum and Hammon.
“We’re going to have to work a lot harder to win this year than what we did in the previous years,” she said.
