The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) finally paid COVID-19 social relief of distress grants (SRD) grant beneficiaries in June. However, millions of the applicants were rejected.
As previously reported, Brenton van Vrede, the Grants Operations Executive Manager, told SABC News, on Friday, 24 June, that approximately five million of the 10.9 million applications received for the R350 grant were declined.

SASSA said clients would be able to appeal their rejections via the website – https://srd.dsd.gov.za. Here is a step-by-step guide to the appeal process.
Step 1 – Visit the website and scroll down until you reach a button that reads “click here to lodge an appeal or check appeal status.” Click the button to access the appeals portal.
Step 2 – Enter the ID number and cellphone number used to make the R350 grant application.
Step 3 – Click on the “send pin” button”. An SMS with a verification PIN will be sent to the cellphone number you entered previously.
This verification is to ensure that you are the correct person making the appeal. Without access to the correct cellphone number, you will not be able to proceed with the application.
If you lost your cellphone or changed your cellphone number, you will be able to update your details via the website from 1 July.
Step 4 – Type in the PIN and hit submit.
Step 5 – Select the month you are appealing from a drop-down list. If you have only applied for the R350 grant in one month it will already be showing. The system will also show why your application was declined.
Step 6 – Select your reason for appealing the rejection from a drop list.
Step 7 – Hit submit and you are done.
