Sassa reviews social grants in KZN – Zululand Observer

SASSA has urged all grantees who failed to heed the call to provide the requested information and documentation, to submit this at their nearest Sassa offices.
In January, Sassa in KZN identified 78 811 social grants that needed to be reviewed. The agency informed the identified beneficiaries and primary caregivers to present themselves for a review in line with the Social Assistance Act (2004) regulations.

KZN Sassa spokesperson Sandy Godlwane said as of July, only 38 622 beneficiaries failed to provide the agency with the required documents.
“That compelled Sassa to suspend these grant payments at the end of July. We administer social grants as per the provisions of the Social Assistance Act, 2004,” said Godlwane.
“One of the requirements is that Sassa must ensure the information utilised for grant payments is current and that grant payments are made only to those citizens who meet the qualifying criteria.
“This means every beneficiary has a responsibility to inform Sassa of any changes in their circumstances, such as their marital status, income, employment status, medical condition, and prove that the beneficiary is still alive,” she said.
Godlwane said they urge affected beneficiaries to present themselves for a review by visiting their nearest Sassa office.
“We request those affected to submit their identity document, children’s birth certificates for Child Support Grants, three-month bank statement of the beneficiary and spouse if married, payslip of the beneficiary and spouse if married, proof of residence, and for disability and care dependency grant beneficiaries to undergo a medical assessment and court order in respect of the Foster Child Grants.
“After submitting all the required documents within 30 days of suspension of the grant, Sassa may restore the grant from the date on which it was suspended,” she said.
