Against the backdrop of massive unemployment in South Africa, a budget cut to the Department of Social Development could leave up to 500 000 people without the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant of R350.
The department and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) delivered a presentation to the Standing Committee on Appropriations on Friday.
The impact of the R44 billion budgeted for SRD grant in the current financial year was one of the topics canvassed.
