Sylvan Beach, N.Y. — A 25-year-old man who was released from prison a year ago and is a registered sex offender has been charged with beating a 55-year-old man with a crowbar following a minor property damage accident, according to state police.
Dillon M. Kotary, of Osceola, was involved in a minor property damage accident in Annsville on Aug. 30, police said. Following the collision, Kotary attacked the other driver with a crowbar then fled, police said.
The driver called police. He was treated at a hospital for internal injuries, police said.
Kotary was charged Monday with felony assault, criminal possession of a weapon, driving without a license and leaving the scene of a property damage accident without reporting it. He is in the Oneida County jail, police said.
This is not his first brush with the law, according to public records and news reports. Kotary was released from state prison in June 2019 after serving three years for a third-degree burglary conviction in 2016. He took several items from Nicole’s restaurant in Camden, according to news reports at the time.
In October, before his conviction for the burglary, Kotary led police on a high-speed chase that ended with his arrest in his backyard in Camden.
At the time, Kotary, then 21, had a 16-year-old in the car with him. He was on probation and driving without a license, he told police, according a story on He also had recently been convicted of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in Rome, according to the New York State Sex Offender Registry.
Kotary is a level 2 sex offender, according to the registry.
