Aotearoa New Zealand has created a powerful film to welcome football teams and their fans for the Fifa Women’s World Cup 2023, which will be hosted in Australia and New Zealand.
The film, created by Tourism New Zealand, serves as an invitation to the ten qualifying nations that will arrive in New Zealand from February next year for the tournament.
It features New Zealand Football Ferns, Claudia Bunge and Paige Satchell alongside traditional custodians of the land Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to deliver a powerful invitation to fans from around the world.
The film sees Tarumai Kerehoma-Hoani, a renowned Māori Performing Arts tutor and female leader of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, deliver the greeting. She is joined by Piripi Davis, another leader of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, who delivers the wero, or laying down of the taki, which takes place within a Māori welcoming ceremony.
The film aims to showcase the unique experience that New Zealand offers to visitors and further promote the country’s culture, people and natural environment.
